Healthy Gums

Tooth

Even to a non dentist a picture of a healthy gum has got to look good. The color of the gum should be pink and not red. It should be tight up against the tooth, not puff or bleeding. It should have a stippled appearance like an orange peel.

The edge of the gum has a small indentation or gum pocket where it meets the tooth. The depth of this pocket should be no more than 3mm, about 1/8 inch.

At our office the hygienist will comfortably measure the depth of these pockets to determine their state of health.

New methods of treatment at the office and at home in addition to new antibiotic treatments are allowing us to easily reduce the deleterious effects of gum disease. This treatment is called soft tissue management.
